    Unlike previous generations, the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX is no longer designed and marketed only to race car enthusiasts and has now been toned down a bit to be more acceptable to a larger and more mainstream marketplace without entirely losing the sport car look and feel. The result is an overall better car that is more comfortable and refined with increased access and room for passengers and cargo. Additional Impreza models include the base model 2.5i, Outback Sport and the high performance WRX STI.

    WRX is the top of the line Impreza and is equipped with a fuel efficient 2.5 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine that delivers 224 horsepower to all four wheels via a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission with over ride capabilities that allow for manual shifting when desired. Available as either a 4 door sedan or a 5 door hatchback, there is more than ample passenger room for a small car in both the front and back and a relatively large amount of cargo space.

    The sedan and hatchback both come equipped with a fairly admirable amount of options, including eye appealing 10 spoke 17 inch aluminum alloy wheels, two tone exterior, sport tuned suspension, heated exterior mirrors, heated sport designed front seats with premium cloth upholstery, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a sharp looking luminescent instrument panel. In typical Subaru fashion, all components and materials are high quality. If you want more features, a premium option package is available to add sport features such as fog lights, rear spoiler and an outstanding premium audio system with steering wheel mounted audio controls. A satellite radio and navigation system options package is also available.

    When the Impreza WRX showed up on American soil, buyers were hesitant. Not many sedans are marketed as a factory-made performance sedan. Most of the street machines seen on the road have a significant number of after-market upgrades, like body kits, ambient lighting, dual exhaust, and tubochargers. However, the WRX already had much of that straight from the factory. A low-profile body kit was part of the package on the sales lot. A Mitsubishi turbocharged engine was already under the hood. Dual chrome outlet exhaust was standard. The Impreza has an engine feature specific to Subaru; the flat internal-combustion engine is mounted under the hood lengthwise for easier accessibility to the transmission and gearbox.

    While it took awhile for America to catch on, professional racers have been driving the Impreza WRX since its origination in Japan. The Subaru Rally Team drove the WRX for several years. Most recently, Subaru has updated the racing WRX and created the latest version, the WRC. Another rendering, the WRX STI is driven in a variety of Group N rallies and is also available for purchase to the general public. The Subaru Impreza WRX is also utilized in open-track racing and has won several races. Racer Gary Sheehan has driven the car all the way to 2nd place in over ten races, proving that the WRX is a force to be reckoned with.

Families with children will be pleased with the number of safety features, including some specifically aimed at protecting a younger passenger. Young buyers might find that the Tribeca’s lack of powertrain options is a disappointment, and with only 16 city MPG and 21 highway MPG a slew of eco-conscious consumers will end up looking at the Suzuki XL7 or elsewhere.

    Subaru’s reputation for producing some of the most durable vehicles on the road will sure to be a selling point for potential buyers. However, it appears that Subaru has failed to remember that most modern consumers are looking for a fuel efficient model because the Tribeca’s poor fuel economy has not been improved for 2009.

    Under the hood, the Subaru Tribeca is powerfully equipped with only one engine selection, a 256 horsepower 3.6L H6 Boxer engine that is fitted lengthwise to give the model improved stability and lower friction. With 247-lbs per foot of torque, the Tribeca is at the top in its class. The five-passenger model comes standard with a five-speed adaptive electronic automatic transmission that features SPORTSHIFT manual controls. The SPORTSHIFT element allows drivers to switch into a manual mode that provides more control for the driver. Symmetrical all-wheel drive is also standard on the Tribeca. With the combination of the Vehicle Dynamics Control, the four-door SUV has improved handling and can adjust to specific road conditions.

    The highest trim, the Limited Seven-Passenger, is fitted with all of the latest in technological advancements and includes a great number of safety features. The Traction Control System, four-wheel independent raised suspension, and active front seat head restraints are just a few of the overwhelming number of safety additions. Seatbelts in the second and third rows can be manually adjusted to fit younger passengers or those in child car seats as well.     There are four engines in the Impreza, and all of them are 2.5 liter, H4 (a Subaru thing) gasoline powered. One of them is a standard engine with 170 horsepower and the other three are turbocharged with horsepower ratings of 224, 265 and 305. Thing is, you don’t get any options in spite of all those engines. The engine you get depends on the trim you choose.

    You do get some options with the transmissions, however. Most trims can choose from a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual, though three trims come only with the manual. There is also a six-speed manual, the only choice on the high end WRX STI.

    As one would expect, fuel efficiency depends on the particular engine chosen. The regular engine gets a respectable 20 miles per gallon city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway with the manual transmission. This creeps down to 17 miles per gallon city and 23 miles per gallon highway with the 305 horsepower version.

    Since the Impreza was increased in size in the 2008 model year, fuel economy is a little below average for the small car class. The warranty also leaves room for improvement. However, with the more powerful engines there is horsepower to spare, giving an excellent power to weight ratio. Increasing the size of the car has also given it more legroom than most of its class.

    Price on the base 2009 Subaru Impreza is also a plus, at only $17,495. All in all, it’s classic Subaru and classic small car Japanese design, which is about as good as it gets.

    Subaru continues to grow with engineering and design accomplishments such as the new B9 Tribeca. Subaru has introduced a stylish yet practical mid-size SUV that will bring all the boys to the yard. With the most up-to-date seat belt tensioners and side-curtain airbags, Tribeca will cradle your family in an environment in which they can really feel safe.

    A serious contender in the cross-over SUV category is the Subaru Forester, an SUV that floats like a butterfly and flies like the wind.
